Tao te Ching – A Photographic Journey

“These two spring from the same source but differ in name.” (Tao Te Ching, Verse 1)

Art is not simply a form of creative self-expression, but an act of generosity. A work of Art is an offering, an invitation from the artist to viewers to “see through my eyes, feel through my emotions, experience from my perspective.” In that sense, Art seeks to fulfill one of our most basic human needs, the instinct to communicate with others, to share something of ourselves within the modern world. Art is the most potent form of communication, for it speaks a universal language capable of transcending the boundaries of individual difference, time, and space, and connects us to the collective heart of our shared humanity.

The truth of our fundamental interconnectedness is also a theme that resonates throughout the Tao Te Ching, the ancient Chinese book of wisdom. The Tao invites us to recognize the multilayered nature of our existence, by reminding us that beyond our perceptions of individuality and separateness there exists a deep, elemental, unchangeable unity that connects humans one to another, and to all of nature.

In light of our goal of fostering intercultural communication and understanding through Art, the Caroline Victoria Coldicutt Arts Foundation (CVCAF) is proud to announce a unique new initiative that will bring these two inspirational sources together in a wonderful way. In collaboration with Bruce Fleming, a world-respected U.K. photographer and student of the Tao for almost half a century, CVCAF is producing a museum-quality, photographic art book entitled Tao Te Ching – A Photographic Journey. The volume, which will feature spectacular images shot at various UNESCO-designated heritage sites in China interspersed with verses from the Tao, will offer an intimate portrayal of an ancient culture in transition within the modern world while offering interpretation through photographic imagery.

The Tao Te Ching – A Photographic Journey will be available from all major booksellers in November, 2012.
